Citing Need for Increased School Funding, Teacher, Declares Candidacy for Missouri House <br />

Canton,MO-Feeling confident she will bring a needed voice for all constituents to Jefferson City, Keri Cottrell, a fourth grade teacher, filed Tuesday as a candidate for the Missouri House of Representatives in the 1st district. <br />
“This campaign is not about powerful special interests or partisanship. It is about realizing the need to secure adequate funding for our schools in the 1st district,” Cottrell said. “Declining enrollment and declining assessed valuation coupled with a state funding formula that is harmful to rural schools caused me to realize the need for more effective representation for the people in northeast Missouri,” said Cottrell. <br />
“A declining population and a loss of industry led to shrinking revenue to support our communities. I will make it a priority to address this issue in Jefferson City on behalf of my constituents, ”Cottrell said .”Educational, healthcare, transportation, industrial, and agricultural concerns will be equally important in my office.” <br />
“Keri Cottrell will bring values like caring for your neighbor back to Jefferson City and work to restore health care to families,” said state senator Wes Shoemeyer. “She will represent northeast Missouri by supporting local control.” <br />
Cottrell has taught at Canton R-V Elementary school for fourteen years. Her interest in education is evident in her involvement as 2nd Vice President of the Northeast Region of Missouri State Teacher’s Association (MSTA) and her service to that association on its state Resolutions Committee. She served on the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s team responsible for reviewing the Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) for Social Studies. The GLEs outline what it to be taught at each grade level. Previously, she served the northeast region of MSTA on its legislative committee. Cottrell previously served as president of Canton R-V PTO, Canton R-V Community Teacher’s Association, and the Beta Psi chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. She is an active member of Immanuel United Methodist Church. Keri and her husband, Tony, reside in Canton with fifteen year old daughter, Hannah. Their son, Andrew, is a sophomore agricultural systems management major at the University of Missouri-Columbia. <br />

<h2><font size="3">CANTON, MO -- Missouri state representative Brian Munzlinger visits Canton Elementary regularly to discuss state government students, but one of the teachers is now running against him. Munzlinger is running against fourth grade teacher Keri Cottrell. She's running on behalf of all rural schools who've been experienced staff and funding cuts. Munzlinger's visit was arranged ahead of time before Cottrell considered running.</font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">Keri Cottrell said, "the only thing that is different is now we're both political candidates, he's come to my classroom and talked about state government for several years, today its different because now I'm running against him for his office."</font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">Brian Munzlinger said, "I've worked very close with teachers associations and I find it ironic that she wants to run."</font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">The 1st district state house election will be on the August 5th primary ballot. Cottrell is running on the Democratic side.</font></h2>

<h2><font size="3">Keri Cottrell, of Canton, MO, is a fourth grade teacher in the Canton School, and is campaigning for the Missouri House of Representatives, on the Democrat ticket. She spent the day in the Memphis area, on July 2nd.</font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">Keri started her morning by dropping in on the “Antiquers”, who were having their morning coffee and gossip session at the Scotland County Antique Fair building. She met several voters and gave them a pen.</font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">From there, she traveled with Deide Preibe for another coffee break at the Gingerbread House, where she visited with patrons. Next the duo dropped in on the County Court, and several other courthouse offices.</font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">“Our most pleasant visit was with residents in the Care Center, along with administrator, Daisy Murphy, and several of the staff,” said Priebe. Keri enjoyed having her picture taken with one of the oldest residents, and a life-long-Democrat, 103 year old, Berniece Reed, and her roommate, Betty Turnbow. Also Keri heard some concerns of Lucille Montgomery and others, who are hoping for a change.</font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">After the visit in the Care Center, Cottrell toured the hospital and Medical Clinic, where she visited with some patients and staff. Keri was very impressed with the cleanliness and services of both facilities.</font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">For lunch Cottrell and Priebe joined the senior citizens at the Senior Center, where she had a chance to visit with the diners, before joining the Red Hat ladies for the delicious fried chicken lunch.</font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">After lunch, Cottrell was introduced to Shelly Boyer and patrons at The Fabius, before finishing up our day at the Village Market, where she met more prospective constituents and enjoyed shopping in the bulk items.</font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">Keri is trying to visit all the counties in the First District, before her school year starts the last of August.</font></h2>

<h2><font size="3">MONTICELLO, Mo. -- It was a low-anxiety primary election for legislative hopefuls in Northeast Missouri, but candidates in two of the districts won't be so relaxed in November. </font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">In the 1st House District, Rep. Brian Munzlinger, R-Williamstown, will be challenged by Canton Democrat Keri Cottrell. In the 8th House District, Rep. Tom Shively, D-Clarence, will be challenged by Republican Mike Austin of Ethel. </font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">Munzlinger has faced election challenges before and knows they can be nerve wracking. </font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">"I never stop campaigning. I try never to miss a parade or a local function, but with five and a half counties to represent, you can't be everywhere," Munzlinger said. </font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">The 1st District encompasses all of Lewis, Clark, Scotland, Knox and Schyler counties and half of Marion County. </font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">First elected in 2002, Munzlinger said his six years of experience, his involvement on organizational boards and his legislative record should make a difference to voters who have elected him in the past. </font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">"I've tried to get out and meet the people and listen to their concerns," Munzlinger said. </font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">Cottrell said her own concerns and those of many other 1st District constituents have not been met. </font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">A teacher at Canton R-5 School District, Cottrell said Munzlinger supported a new school funding formula that is harmful to rural schools. She said Munzlinger also failed to vote on an amendment to take school vouchers off a piece of legislation during April. </font></h2>
<h2><font size="3">"He was present for other votes that evening," Cottrell said. </font></h2>
